EL wire is flexible plastic cord that glows brightly when high-voltage AC is applied to it. It’s available in numerous colors with cool, and requires very little current, but it can be difficult to work with because of the high-voltage requirements. The Elecrow EL Shield enables you to implement up to 8 channels of EL wires or tapes in to your project and gives you solution to control the EL wires. With Arduino or Crowduino, You will be able to control 8 EL devices simultaneously and separately. The controlling method is as simple as controlling an LED. Driven by PWM, it can create a colorful and florid effect by controlling each EL wire according to your own programs. I had thought up an idea to use El wire in an automotive project. I finished it up and it looked great but it was just static. I want the wow factor. So I set out to make it wow people. I searched my options and came up using a sheild to be the best size wise. There are a few out there but much higher prices or not offering 8 El connections. I already use Arduino in a lot of projects so why not. I was very impressed by the build quality when it arrived. I attached it to my uno and installed a sketch. I hooked the 4 provided El wire connectors to the shield and to 4 El wires. Then I had connected the 12v DC to ac converter I had and the El wire came to life. I do suggest to go ahead and order a set or two more of the El wire adaptor wires. I ended up using 6 of the 8 connections.
NOTE: during bench testing. Using 3meter El wire. All 8 connections made. You will see dimness and in some instances the sketch not working properly. This is due to voltage drops incurred by trying to light so much wire with only one power supply. The power supply lights up 6m of El wire nicely. So if you plan on using multiple connections keep the total length of El wire to 6m or less.
Programing is as simple as turning on a led either with an analog sketch or a digital pmw sketch.
