What is it?

Protomatrix is an advanced matrix router breadboard designed for reproducible prototyping of electronic circuits. Protomatrix breadboard has a built-in matrix router that allows you to make connections without the use of jumper wires. Each matrix crosspoint is implemented as a solder jumper that can be closed by applying a small amount of solder.

Why did you make it?

I made it after learning about matrix routing algorithms used in high-end PXI switching matrices in test equipment. I realized I could build a matrix switching architecture into the humble breadboard!

What makes it special?

It allows you to just randomly solder a bunch of parts into the board and then connect them in arbitrary ways by following a simple algorithm:

• Solder your parts into the board
• Split your circuit into NETS
• Assign each NET to a Y ROW
• Assign each node to an X column
• To implement a NET, close solder jumpers at intersections between Y ROW of the NET and X columns of each node in the NET
• You may re-open jumpers by using solder braid

• Routes 30 nets between 160 nodes
• Dimensions are 8.75IN x 4.55IN with M3 mounting holes

Customization

Custom board sizes can be ordered (MOQ 5 PCBs). The board is auto-routed using specialized software. I can generate a matrix board of any size with-in minutes for your needs. Gerber files available on request.
