KeyMod connector prototype test: which direction feels best

We are refining KeyMod and currently testing four connector prototype directions. They all work, but daily usability feels different. This round focuses on plug-in comfort, device clearance, portability, and real-world workflow convenience. You can also check the KeyMod pre-launch page and help us vote on the connector direction.

Story

We are currently refining KeyMod, and one small but important detail is still under active testing: the connector format.

In this round, we made and tested four prototype versions, labeled A / B / C / D.

At first glance, these versions may look similar. But in actual use, even a small directional difference can affect a lot:

  • how naturally the adapter plugs into a phone or laptop
  • how much space it takes in a compact setup
  • how easy it is to grip and remove
  • how convenient it feels during repeated daily use
  • whether it feels smooth or slightly awkward over time

To evaluate this, we tested the prototypes in a practical bench setup, including phone based control, direct device connection, and quick comparison during real workflow use.

This stage is not only about whether the connector works electrically. It is also about whether it feels right in real use.

One of the key questions for us is daily usability. A small hardware detail that seems minor during design can have a surprisingly big impact once people start plugging and unplugging it again and again.

To compare the four options more directly, we also tested how each direction behaves in real plug in scenarios.

This kind of comparison helps us see more than just function. It shows which direction feels more intuitive, which one creates less visual or physical obstruction, and which one may be more comfortable for long term everyday use.

We also paid close attention to laptop side connection experience, especially clearance and plug in comfort in tighter port layouts.

Because KeyMod is designed around practical local control, we also want the connector choice to support a smooth phone driven workflow rather than becoming a small but repeated annoyance.

We have not finalized the direction yet, so this round is still part of the evaluation process.

We are still evaluating the options and would really appreciate your input. You can vote here:

We would love to know:

  • Which version looks the most practical to you?
  • Which one seems least annoying in daily use?
  • Which one would you personally choose?
