Story
Overview
Openterface KeyMod is a compact USB and Bluetooth HID emulator that turns your phone into a portable keyboard and trackpad. When a device has video output but keyboard and mouse access is inconvenient, KeyMod lets you take control quickly and reliably with a minimal kit.
KeyMod is designed for practical, on-the-go local control, not as a remote desktop replacement. The target device stays clean and does not require any software installs.
Why KeyMod
In real deployments, you often need quick input for devices that are awkward to reach or maintain:
- kiosks and digital signage players
- set-top boxes and smart TV devices
- mini PCs used as utility machines
- lab rigs and test benches
- on-site troubleshooting and demos
Key Features
- USB HID keyboard and mouse emulation for plug-and-play local input
- Bluetooth HID support for cable-light scenarios (when pairing makes sense)
- Phone-based control UI: keyboard and trackpad on demand
- Custom profiles for hotkeys, shortcuts, and simple macro-style triggers
- Advanced layouts (exploration): keypad mode and gamepad-style mapping
- Planned connector options:
- 2-in-1 flip-up USB Type-A + USB Type-C
- dedicated USB Type-C version
- Open source direction: hardware and software will be published as the project evolves (schematics, PCB, firmware, app, BOM)
How It Works (Quick)
- Connect KeyMod to the target via USB (or use Bluetooth when appropriate).
- Open the KeyMod app on your phone.
- Type, click, and navigate instantly as if a keyboard and mouse were connected.
Status
KeyMod is currently under active development and prototyping. We’re refining the input “feel”, reliability, and profile design through testing and community feedback.
A Small Teaser (Experimental)
AI is showing up everywhere in daily workflows. We’re exploring whether a pocket input tool can benefit from it too. One early direction is voice-to-input, where spoken phrases in different languages could be converted into text and typed on the target via HID. This is prototype-level exploration and will evolve based on real use cases.
