Story
The Poseidon is an innovative, electric-powered inflatable hydrocycle designed for fun, eco-friendly water recreation. Built using Drop Stitch technology, it combines the portability of an inflatable craft with the rigidity and performance of a hard-shell jet ski — all without compromising on safety or comfort.
Unlike traditional inflatable boats, Poseidon features a three-chambered hull design that ensures stability and buoyancy even if one chamber is compromised. It has a dual-seat saddle for rider and passenger, ergonomically shaped for comfort during extended use. Underfoot, non-slip grip plates provide secure footing, allowing riders to stand confidently while steering. A removable battery pack is located under the seat for easy charging and maintenance. Directional control is handled via a steering wheel, while propulsion comes from an externally mounted brushless motor and fixed propeller — a simple, serviceable setup that avoids complex internal ducting.
This project bridges the gap between recreational watercraft and sustainable mobility — offering silent, zero-emission propulsion perfect for lakes, rivers, and calm coastal waters.
How does it work?
The hull is made from high-density Drop Stitch fabric, which becomes rock-solid when inflated to 12–15 PSI. Three independent air chambers provide redundancy and structural integrity. A removable lithium-ion battery pack (e.g., 48V 10Ah) sits under the seat and connects via waterproof quick-disconnects to the motor controller and motor. The motor is mounted externally on the transom, driving a fixed three-blade propeller — a proven, reliable configuration that’s easy to access, repair, or upgrade. Directional control is achieved through a steering wheel connected to a rudder mechanism beneath the hull. No complex hydraulics — just simple, robust mechanical linkage. The dual-seat saddle offers ergonomic support, while textured non-slip footplates ensure a stable standing position. LED indicators show battery level and speed mode. An optional Bluetooth app allows real-time monitoring of range, speed, and battery health.
Modular Design: From Propeller to Jet Drive
One of Poseidon’s key strengths is its modular architecture. While the current prototype uses an external propeller for simplicity and cost-effectiveness, the hull design allows for future adaptation to a jet pump system — just like in traditional jet skis. By reinforcing the rear section and integrating a water intake tunnel, the same Drop Stitch platform could house an electric jet drive, offering higher speed, better shallow-water performance, and improved safety (no exposed propeller). This flexibility makes Poseidon not just a finished product, but a platform for experimentation.
What’s in the kit?
In addition to the main unit, Poseidon includes a compact foldable paddle — essential for emergency situations like battery depletion or navigating very shallow zones. Just unfold, paddle to shore, and recharge — no need to worry about being stranded.
Why this matters to the community
Poseidon isn’t just a toy — it’s a proof-of-concept for sustainable personal watercraft. With rising environmental awareness, there’s growing demand for quiet, clean, and accessible water vehicles. This project encourages makers to explore advanced materials like Drop Stitch, efficient electric drivetrains, and modular, user-serviceable designs. It’s also beginner-friendly — no welding required, mostly assembly and wiring. Perfect for DIY enthusiasts, students, and eco-conscious builders who want to ride the waves — silently and responsibly.
